Annual Pet Exams

Annual examinations are an essential part of your pet’s ongoing health care. We recommend that all pets be examined at least once a year, if not more often. Physical check-ups help us to identify your pet’s baseline health, as well as any deviations from their norms. It is important for your pet to come into our office regularly as hands-on examinations often allow us to discover issues that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Bloodwork

While all pets do not need annual bloodwork, we recommend it periodically for younger pets to establish their baseline levels. For older pets, we recommend bloodwork more frequently to identify deviations from their normal levels.

Routine Dental Care

Routine dental care is an important part of your pet’s overall physical health. What happens in your pet’s health often starts in the oral cavity. Tartar and plaque accumulate on your pet’s teeth and have the ability to seep below the gum line. The toxins associated with the tartar and plaque then seep into the bloodstream and are delivered to different parts of the body. Organs that filter the blood can be affected including: the heart, kidneys, and liver.
Keeping a healthy pet requires continuous dental care. We examine their mouth as a part of our physical checkup. This will help in identifying potential issues that could require professional dental cleaning.

Spay and Neuter

If your pet is not being used for breeding, we recommend spaying or neutering for their health. When a pet is spayed or neutered, many health and behavioral issues can be prevented including: cancers, infection of the reproductive organs, aggression, wandering, and more.

Pet Vaccinations

Vaccines are an important part of your pet’s preventive care. At the Animal Clinic of Milford, we prescribe vaccinations based on each pet’s risk of exposure to certain illnesses. For example, some pets who spend lots of time in boarding or day care facilities will need to be protected against diseases that are transmitted pet to pet. Pets that spend a lot of time out on trails or having outdoor adventures need to be protected from tick-borne diseases and diseases passed by wildlife. When your pet comes in for vaccines, we will discuss their needs and lifestyle with you to ensure that they are receiving the right prevention.

Glaucoma Screening with the Tono-Pen

The Tono-Pen is a handheld device that’s used to monitor glaucoma in pets by providing accurate intraocular pressure (IOP) readings. An IOP reading that’s higher than these numbers could indicate the early signs of glaucoma, which can lead to vision loss. Our Tono-Pen allows us to measure IOP to determine a pet’s predisposition to glaucoma and other eye conditions. This tonometer is the most accurate tool offered on the market and, unlike older versions, does not require anesthetic to be used. It’s painless and, for most dogs, not even noticeable!
